This is how Tom and I got to Japan... Of course we took the aeroplane like everyone else, but it was because we were one of the winners of a product design competition.
This design of containers for condiments emphasized touch over sight. Different sleeve textures indicated the contents.
Instead of making something pretty to look at. We made the product tactile and “pretty” to the touch.
What made this a “universal” design was the fact that it didn’t use symbols, which vary from culture to culture, but on sensual memory.
